Getter Robo G is a sequel to Getter Robo. It was created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa and produced by Toei Animation. The concept - three teenagers pilots special jets that can combined together in three different ways to form three different robots - Getter Dragon, Getter Liger and Getter Poseidon. The toys were originally issued by Popy Japan. Mattel took these toys and issued them under the Shogun Warriors banner. Two robot names were changed - Dragun (Getter Dragon) and Raider (Getter Liger). Getter Poseidon was simplified to just Poseidon.

Five years ago I acquired the Shogun Warriors Getter Dragun locally for a good price. It was reviewed here:

Then I decided to try my luck to complete the team by hunting down Poseidon and Raider. I wanted the 1st release of these toys because they retain all the play gimmicks that the original Popy version had. (more on this later). And to find them complete with accessories and box is quite difficult and pricey. Subsequent releases of these toys are easier to get in the secondary market and is cheaper too. After many years, I've finally found a seller in eBay that had both Poseidon and Raider, complete with box - and is willing to accept my best offer with combined shipping.

The team is now complete.

Poseidon and Raider comes in green styrofoam - a unique feature of 1st releases.

Let's check out Dragun (2nd release), My set comes with 2 axes and a fist.

Play feature 1 - Shooting fist. My specimen still works.

(In the 1st release, the right arm launches as well.)

Play feature 2 - Shooting axe - unfortunately this doesn't work on my toy.

The axe is supposed to be chrome.

Next, let's look at Poseidon. He comes with 6 missiles.

Interesting note - These missiles are the same infamous missiles used in Mattel's Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper that caused a child choked to death. In subsequent releases, Mattel changed them to some weird ugly looking yellow flower-like missiles.

Play Feature 1 - Launching missiles. Both missile firing action still works great.

Play Feature 2 - Pivoting Missile Launcher. The missile launcher can be position to face upward, forward or at an angle.. Mattel removed this feature in subsequent releases and permanently set them facing forward.

Play Feature 3 - Poseidon's lower legs can be folded to become tank treads with rolling wheels. Mattel removed this feature in subsequent releases.

Last but not least, let's look at Raider. He comes with Drill weapon, Missile Launcher, 4 missiles and 2 limbs (hands).

Play Feature 1 - Interchangeable limbs. You can replace the limbs with Drill weapon and a Missile launcher. Mattel removed the left limb in subsequent releases.

Play Feature 2 - Shooting missile. My specimen still works great. The red missiles was also replaced with the yellow Flower-missile in later releases.

Here's the team together!

These toys are heavy. Almost the entire figure is made of diecast.

Below left are the two 1st release boxes compared to the right which is 2nd release.

As you can see from the picture - the differences that was mentioned above. And the 1st releases have better paint job, detailing and articulation (knees). That's the reason why I prefer to get the 1st releases.

Obviously, 1st releases of these toys are more expensive. They can go from USD180-500 depending on condition and completeness.

Subsequent releases price ranges from USD70-200.
