Here's another vintage toy review. This time we look at Space Runaway Ideon toy by Tomy. There are no copyright date on this toy or it's packaging. The anime debuted from 1980-1981, so I guess this toy should be from that time too. Tomy came out with many versions of Ideon toy, and this version is known as "Sound Flasher" Ideon. This is an electronic toy with lights and sounds and shooting gimmicks. There are no diecast content. Let's check out the box. It's beautifully illustrated.

Similar to most Japanese robots toys packaging of the 1980s, the back features a 'cut-away' section of Ideon.

The sword shown here is yellow. This is probably a prototype. The actual toy came with a chrome sword.

Ideon comes in a styrofoam tray. Accessories includes:
1) 4 chrome fist
2) 4 chrome feet blades (I don't know what are these called actually...)
3) 6 yellow missiles on sprue
4) 1 large chrome sword
5) 1 instruction sheet

The joints are ratcheted! Due to the electronics feature, the head doesn't move.

Play gimmicks - rocket punch!

Feet blades shoots out too!

The side of the chest opens to reveal missile launchers. This fires the mini yellow missiles.

Now for the electronic feature. It requires 2 AA batteries.

No screwdrivers required. The battery cover slides up to reveal the battery compartment.

There are three buttons at the back.

When you press these buttons, they emit a weird beeping sound. The robot eyes lights up (green).

The chest lights up (red)

And finally the waist lights up (green).

This is definately a fun toy to have when you're a kid in the 80s.
It has all the cool firing gimmicks of Chogokin robots, good articulation, gigantic sword and has electronics lights and sounds! What more could you ask for.

It's quite rare. Doesn't show up on eBay often. Saw one selling for USD 200++.
