I remember as a kid, I've always wanted to buy the robot with the lion on his chest. I didnt know his name that time. But I've never got one. Fast forward this year, I got this as a gift. It feels like a completion for me. I don't remember watching this anime as a kid. Did some search on net and found out that Daltanious is inspired by the name D'artagnan from the Three Musketeers. The anime full name is Mirai Robo Daltanious (Future Robot Daltanious) aired from1979-1980. Daltanious is form with 3 parts - Atlas (the robot), Beralios (the lion) and Gunper (the spaceship).
Interesting facts:
1) This is the first Japanese robot that features a lion head on the chest. There are many robots with lion head chest in case you are wondering (Transformers Leo Prime, GaoGaiGar, Power Rangers Gao Megazord....etc)
2) Initially World Events Production (WEP) wanted to adapt this for the US market. When requesting the master tapes from TOEI Animation, they ask for "the ones with the lion". Toei mistakenly sent them 'Beast King Golion' that features 5 combining lions. WEP decided to stick with Golion and that became the popular Voltron we know today.
